Another open source forum product that is fairly good for the "bb code" and avatar group is CFBB Forums from www.adersoftware.com
We use to for our gaming forum http://forum.gearboxgamezone.com/ and the kids tolerate the non PHBB style stuff because it has enough of the smiley and avatar functionality they want.
