Well, I'm sure to piss someone off with an analogy or two later in the thread, but here goes. The freedom that any set of rules provides is the freedom to avoid having to answer every question about how to do something, every time it comes up. If I don't have to decide what to name a program, or where to put it, or how other programs interact with it, I can focus on the unique, important things about that program and what it has to do. Of course, that's a somewhat elastic definition of freedom, but important nonetheless.
