I'll be glad when "build-it-yourself" laptops become common.
I have always avoided laptops until recently because I couldn't
replace part easily or service them myself...

Even if you are talking laptop, the barebones/build-it-yourself laptop field
is taking off. Intel is driving this with the new platforms.
