Rick, I don't have an answer for you, but I just wanted to say that I've
always been able to get Apache working with minimal fuss.  I'm not
saying that you're dumb, just that I hope you don't get a bad taste in
your mouth about Apache because of all these weird problems you're
having.  Not to mention, Apache is used by about 65% of the public
Internet, so it's pretty solid and stable.
