Because you want to make things as easy for clients as possible I guess. they can upload anything they want, and you don't have to train them to only upload JPEG images and stuff like that. It makes sense to me. For example, if you use Cafe Press, you can upload a wide variety of image formats - including native photoshop PSD files, and it'll resize and create jpeg thumbnails for you to see in your image basket.
