Steve, I still believe is Flash remoting the problem. I would use Fiddler to see what happens when your form loads and it tries to access /CFFormGateway/
You can also create a simple form with just one input field <cfinput name="test" type="text" value="some data"...> and see if it populates. My guess is that it won't, meaning that the database and the data there are not the problem.
