Hi all,
Please forgive the somewhat off topic post. I'm looking for some resources about how
to manage time zone differences across a distributed server application. I was under
the impression that the "best" way to do this is to set all the servers to the same
time zone, ideally GMT or UTC. This is unrelated to what the final user of the
application sees in terms of time -- I'm only concerned about internal system
processes at this point. In our case, the Web/CF server is on EST, the DB server is
on CST, one partner with whom we exchange data is on MST, and another is on PST.
I have a person, who works for my client, who insists that the "correct" way to do it
is to keep the local time on each server, and have the application make the necessary
adjustments, which I think is absurd due to the fact that we have this application
working across 4 time zones and the servers move around all the time (and some are not
even in our control). Since states make the daylight savings switch on their own
schedules, and some don't make it at all, I think the maintenance on such a system
would be a nightmare, if not impossible.
Anyway, I'm looking for a resource to back up my position or to explain to me why the
other guy is right. Web and/or printed resources would be great.
Thanks!
-Max
