I am not saying that SPs etc (not that has anything to do with you level of SQL per se) are what you should know, we all know that ColdFusion can do a lot with loops and SQL but if you have no choice but to use SQL in a job, you will be stuffed if all you know SELECT. I think the more you know about all of the disciplines related to web technologies the better. However in 10 years I have never seen a routine done with a SP that couldnt also be done by some other method. I think stored procedures are only one of several choices usually. You could live without SPs, just as you can live without javascript or flash, even though they're all immensely useful tools in the right place. I think it's overstating the case to say "you can't be a coldfusion developer without knowing a lot about T-SQL". I think it's highly desirable to know about T-SQL, and if you know T-SQL you're more valuable so an employer who uses it, but you can be an effective developer in many environments without knowing squat about T-SQL.
