One of the worst as I noted was the IF mortgage calculator... It was awful.

Must be just you, because I've never encountered "slowness" in a flex 
application.  All of the sample apps and the apps I've built run 
perfectly fine.  We've already deployed numerous Flex apps here 
internally and the response has been great.
