It's kind of odd. If I set the max to 1024 Mb, it fails to start.
Coldfusion-out.log shows the following:

Error occurred during initialization of VM
Could not reserve enough space
for object heap

Starting Macromedia JRun
4.0 (Build 92909), coldfusion server

If I set to 768 Mb it starts just fine.

The max was set to 512 Mb (which I think is the default).

Running right now, the server has more than 2 Gb unused. 768 will probably
be fine, but when we do get hit, we usually get hit really hard. Avergae
day might be 100,000 page views, but on a big day, it could easily double or
triple that.
