thanks for your reply alan. the system is not quite a complicated as a spreadsheet system, but also not a system for standardised data. The system could appear to be like a course management system, therefore each users data will be different.
so although it wont need as much interaction with the database as a spreadsheet, i cant used cached data on the server or applicatiion variables.
