Joe Celko approaches this issue in his books. http://www.amazon.com/Hierarchies-Smarties-Kaufmann-Management-Systems/dp/1558609202
I have used one of his hierachies after a friend turned me on to his methodology. I used it to manage a staff hierarchy of employees to managers. After the table is created into an aggregate hierarchy, the search time and features are fantastic. I can search through parent and child relationships with very simple queries. I believe Joe has a google group and has some code or discusses this idea there as well. It is an intermediate to advanced topic in DB architecture, but a few days research and your are done.
