Actually, you don't have give you all this trouble.
In all my edit templates, I transmit the id of the record I want to work on.
When adding a new record, the id will be 0
But I still make the same query WHERE itemId = #id#.
If id = 0, CFQUERY returns an empty query, but all fields are defined 
with empty values.
