Relative paths for anything that sits below the webroot and absolute paths for anything accessible from the browser.
Why make it harder on your self. If it's a tough directory to get to, meaning it's 3 or 4 levels deep might as well make a mapping for it and call it a day. #ApplicationWebRoot#/Directory/File.cfm or ../../../../../Directory/File.cfm - yuck.
