As the name suggests, it is the proxy between ColdFusion and Java that handles translating HashMaps to Structs, Arrays to Collections, strings to Strings, and handles the invocation of methods from Java classes. You can see this whenever you have an error in your CreateObject("Java") code. It's in the stack dump.
