In that case it's likely that the culprit is your mail server. Perhaps they enabled some rate limiting on it to fight spam, or maybe it's just overloaded. I believe IMS can act as it's own mail server, but you will need to add proper reverse dns entries and do a bunch of other annoying things to ensure proper delivery.
