Mik, You will need to take one thing into consideration, what is the target audience for this and for what purpose is this chat for?
The reason I ask this is because, if your demographic is limited then you have no problem. If however you want to make it broader, you will need to take into consideration that most businesses and companies have java applets switched of or denied. Now if it is for something like support, why reinvent the wheel and look at one that is dedicated to this for you. Overall, I would be looking at a flash option, or better still go to www.skype.com and look at their API for developers, then you only need to worry about the server end.
