a long time ago (around 2002, I think) there was an open source chat server application on sourceforge or somewhere called "aChat"... simple java client, python server backend.
Unfortunately, it no longer seems to be available (there is an achat out there but it seems to be something else). It didn't have a whiteboard though... that's what you're going to have the most trouble finding.
