I think the problem is that several spammers use that method to remove 
bad email addresses from their lists that the spam software nowadays 
just assumes that it's spam.

I know that sometimes, HTML messages get through, so it's not a hard 
fast rule. But I also know I get allot of pictures that are served from 
a server outside the ISP in my spam box.

I also use Thunderbird and all pictures served not from the email itself 
(as attachments) do not show up unless I click on them and say it's ok 
to show to prevent the spammers from knowing it's a valid email.

Again, that's only my perceptions.
