Personally I've never bothered with it (both WinAce - my preference - and WinZip have worked with Vista from day one). Vista is actually better than XP in this regard: once another program is registered for ZIP it completely suppresses the built-in tool. Just because I love you guys I actually uninstalled WinAce to try it out and it worked fine for me. Klunky, featureless and bland but it did the job and didn't seem to take much longer than WinAce. The process runs as part of explorer. I know that some systems had problems with performance of copy/move/delete - does yours? If so then I'd lump the two problems together (what is an unzip if not a "copy"). I can't find much in Google so I have to assume that the problem is pretty rare, but I find enough to think that it's common enough to be reasonably possible. Apparently for at least some of this there's a hot-fix available - have you called or mailed support and asked about the problem? Circumstances still make me think that it's not the extraction tool but rather something file-creation related. For example if, under Vista, a full anti-virus check is being done on every file created it might drag things down desperately. Does your problem occur only on unzip (when files are created) or on zip as well (which could indicate something else)? I'm actually using OneCare (it's not great but I got a free license and it seems to work well enough). What are you using for Anti-Virus/Spyware? Programs (like Dreamweaver, in fact, since that started this whole thread) that are made up of many, many small files can have problems with this as well. We had to fight with corporate security to get them to stop McAfee from scanning the WebSphere Application Studio folders (this is on XP). With McAfee enabled opening the application could take upwards of 20 minutes, with it disabled less than 2 minutes. Scanning each of the (many, many, MANY) Java classes and JAR files on start-up was killing us dead in the water.
