Source control is ones best friend but depending on the environments you work in, it can be a task to try and get it up and running. Most of the places I do work for they do not run any form(or a form worth mentioning) of source control on their servers. Some of the places they have the laptops that are provided to do the coding on, locked down to the point where you could not just make it act like some sort of stand alone server so it does all the things you wish the servers out of your control could do.
