"Creating a report is single-threaded" That is something I've been curious/worried about and would explain the huge change in performance.
That wouldn't be a problem and would probably improve performance for a lot of small reports, but the report I was testing with many sub-reports went from about 2 minutes to create up to 30 minutes.
