If they're equal, the VM will allocate a contiguous block of memory on startup, and won't have to (or be able to) allocate additional memory at runtime. In general, allocating and deallocating memory at runtime is costly, so you're better off avoiding it if you can. However, I've run into some specific cases where this strategy doesn't work, for various reasons. I do try to make them as close as possible, though.
