I forgot to mention, that date listed above is the one in the database 
(pubdate) and I don't have any control over the database information.  I'm 
trying to find records are higher than my start_archives_date.  Here's my query:

<cfset start_archives_date = createDate(2008,9,1)>
<cfquery name="archives" dbtype="query">
        SELECT pubdate
         FROM featuresQuery
         WHERE pubdate >= #start_archives_date#
</cfquery>
