One hurdle to consider is how supported is your hardware. I really wanted to move to Ubuntu (I was upgrading drives anyway), but hit problem after problem on my Dell 1501 using the 8.10 release. It seems that the 1501 just has craptastic time of it based on the amount of reports I found over the net, most of it stemming from unreliable driver sets for the wireless card. I spent several days trying to get everything to play nicely together, but gave it up for bad in the end. This doesn't mean that linux (or Ubuntu) is bad, just that for this particular laptop it wasn't worth it.
