It's a messy world out there in transaction processing land. In addition to the direct fees and percentages, consider your PCI compliance costs as well. In my experience, no matter who your merchant account is through or what gateway provider you use, you're going to get hit with something unexpected that costs extra (statement fees anyone?). We're actually considering switching processing on some of our sites over to Braintree. I haven't used their service yet, but in speaking with them they appear to be very straightforward. Their pricing is a little higher than some, but the way they handle transactions takes the web site out of scope for PCI compliance which more than makes up the difference in cost savings on that front. If we end up moving forward with them I'll let everyone know how it goes.
