Many thanks to everyone who responded to my question. I have downloaded the longtail player and really like it - just what I wanted!
However, it seems to only work from the same directory as the calling page. Is there way of placing the player files in /mediaplayer subdirectory and the calling page in another /video subdirectory and still have it work? Also, can ffmpeg/winff produce screen sizes other than the default 320x240screen size?
