Paul, Which version of ColdFusion is running? Some settings in the CF8 and CF9 Enterprise edition may have some performance hit on high load servers. In rare cases the Server Monitor may have a large impact on performance with certain settings (Enable Memory Tracking) enabled. In general the Debug settings should be disabled on production servers be cause there is a performance hit. It's a small one and may never be noticed on minimally used sites. Highly used high load sites may experience performance issues with the Debug settings enabled. In my experience none of them will completely crash the server.
