Well, once you move into full-text searching, traditional database indexes aren't important any more. I don't think it matters that much whether the full-text searching happens through the database server or through an external indexer like Verity. It's basically the same thing happening in different places. But not all databases provide full-text search functionality, and whatever they do provide is platform-specific.
