Good point. A simple unobtrusive way to do this is to provide a "Desktop Version" link in the footer of the mobile version which resets the session vars to desktop.
Putting a popup or interstitial screen is pretty annoying in my pov and having a link in the footer is pretty common these days (for those sites that offer it.)
