Go to http://globalpaymentsinc.com. The two main payment systems they list are
Authorize.net and Cybercash. Cybercash recently was acquired by Verisign, and they're
history in terms of taking new customers.
Personally I found Authorize.net to be the easiest to set up, requiring only a few
lines of CF code to integrate into a cart. Their signup and monthly fees were
reasonable as I recall, although I haven't worked with them for awhile.
Verisign is my personal favorite. Inexpensive setup fees, reasonable monthlies. The
PayFlow Link service is dirt-simple and inexpensive. The PayFlow Pro service is
reasonably priced and also fairly easy to integrate into any cart. Requires a CFX to
be installed on the CF server, which you can't get at the Dev Exchg (you have to get
it from Verisign).
I've found that when it comes to small merchants, banks see this as a
revenue-generating opportunity and -- typically citing fraud and chargeback prevention
concerns -- often try to force their own solutions and consultancies on their clients.
I had one instance where Bank of America told my client to use their Cybercash
consultant -- whose prices were triple mine -- or take all of their business elsewhere
(they did).
One thing you might consider is buying a pre-built solution. CFWebStore
(http://cfwebstore.com) is an excellent option in this regard. If you want to learn
how to build a cart on your own, buy Ben Forta's book: ColdFusion Web Application
Construction Kit. You'll see posts about the new edition that just came out going on
in here right now.

With no experience with shopping carts, SSL certificates and gateways, I
don't have an answer to my banker, who asks if my software is Global
Payment Systems (NDC) approved. I don't recall a discussion on this list
where this was mentioned. Can anyone help me with the terminology I need
to speak with him about this, or point me to a URL that has explanations
that are relatively simple and straightforward? In particular, I'm not
sure what he is specifically referring to by "my software." CF, SSL, or
what?
This is a smaller, regional bank, so maybe you could prompt me with the
questions I ought to be asking him. I'm currently dealing with
CFHosting.com and Advances.com, if anyone has specific insights, based
on these ISPs, although I'm not opposed to hosting with another, if they
make the process easier to set up.
Thanks,
John
