When comparing against Access, its hard to go anywhere but up from where you are now. Access may have a nice front-end client, but... well, you can fill in the blanks on performance, I'm sure.
mySQL may be just one step up the food chain, but its a significant step from where you are now. Dirt-simple to set up with the Win installable version, and an excellent client available (http://mysqlfront.de) that is freeware now, but going to a nominal reg fee for its upcoming v2.0. I'd like to give PostGreSQL a whirl, as everything I've heard touts it as 'better'. Haven't had the time to hunt down a way to compile the thing and get it to run under Win tho'.
