As someone has already pointed out, CF 4.0.1 isn't supported on Windows XP. In fact, it's not even supported on Windows 2000, although it can work on that platform. I haven't used XP, so I don't know how well it'll work on there. On 2000, CF 4.0.1 did break some of the MDAC 2.5 data access layer, so I wouldn't be surprised if it did something similar on XP. This won't have anything to do with your specific problem, though. As for CFIDESERVICE.EXE, my guess is that this file won't exist if you install CF 4.0.1 on XP. XP is more like Windows NT than Windows 98, and the CF install will probably treat XP like NT. So, you'll get services, rather than applications, and you should be able to look in your list of services to see "Cold Fusion Application Server", "ColdFusion RDS Service" and so on.
