caffeine is good too, but only on occasion.  it's great for quick 
bursts of
awareness and creative problem solving, but it generally over-depletes
neurotransmitter production centers and actually winds up making me 
more
sluggish over time even though it keeps me awake.  but then again for 
some
coding projects, the problem solving muscles can take a break during 
the
implementation cycle (especially if it's the billionth time company x 
wants
to reinvent the wheel.)  i find that cigarette smoking has the same 
effect
of keeping me awake without the mental exhaustion.  of course, that 
could
just be the adrenaline rush from having to run outside and stand around
outside in the cold night air every hour and a half.
