Great comments, Mike. As a fellow Australian, I've seen and been
frustrated by many of these problems. For the user, it's not so bad
where the information is being collected just for reference or marketing
purposes, as the user can simply make up a fake address. For example, I
maintain a second and entirely fake home in Beverley Hills - it's the
only US zip code I know. It gets me what I want but doesn't help the
site administrators.

However, it's a different story if you're dealing with financial
transactions. For billing and shipping addresses I need to enter the
correct address. This is really frustrating when the product is
electronic or the vendor is willing to ship overseas. All that's
stopping me from ordering their product is a pesky piece of form
validation! Their loss.

Also, it's ok if you can't offer service to international customers, but
make you sure you make it clear up front! Don't let them waste their
time by finding out halfway through an ordering process.

Good luck to the original poster in your internationalization efforts!

Cheers

Paul
