Honestly,
Here is the real deal.
Write your own. You will know it inside and out. You can push it a bit,
tweak it per client on the fly.

Flat out the time you will spend in researching shopping carts, finding
compatible hosting, learning it, understanding how to get around it's
limits - ALWAYS roadblocks on the cheaper ones... You will have been
able to program your own that exceeds the cheaper ones.

You simply copy all the files over each time and viola. No licensing,
server limitations, upgrade limitations, product limitations - Only
those you set for your self and your customers.

Additionally - it is my experience that a client who wants a simple cart
- virtually always upgrades or improves or needs a feature.. suddenly
you become stuck on a purchased system , or figuring out how to make a
new upgrade work in the new purchased system takes entirely too long.
Lastly - if you offer a good service and a good site and the client
succeeds a bit - they most often as for an upgrade. You will surely be
able to scale the solution you built yourself.. but may have to on the
purchase system port all the data, graphics and everything over... So it
could actually cost you.

Make the investment on the first one.. and all the others are nice
profit. I am still modifying my first cart - and have been able to
charge $2k to $16k based on the same "guts" - with different
modifications and features and such.

good luck

Sure have, but we (the company I work for) is looking for a simple and
more
importantly cheep shopping cart we can provide to our cheep skate
customers
so I can spend my time coding expensive bespoke systems for the larger
ones.

What shopping carts do people use at the moment?

Please don't all say Able Commerce as it is WAY to expensive for what my
client wants.
