Subject: RE: [cf-xml] Stupid Newbie Question

DJ,

I don't know if this helps but I've been using XML to store profiles for users on my website.  Instead of having to goto the DB server and fetch tons of preferences, like colors and nicknames and other customizable things, I use XML on the webserver.  Based on the user's username, I read an XML file off the web server, send it to the WDDX parser (it's in WDDX format since CF works very easily with it), and utilize the info in my web pages.  There is a lot of higher level stuff that's involved as well but that's the basics.  The other use for XML that I've found helpful is when you have to communicate with multiple sources.  For example,  say I take input from an HTML form and serialize it into WDDX and post it to a .cfm page.  Then I take that WDDX packet, validate the data, and transform it into an XML document for my database, then for some third party software, and then to my email server.  I'm able to perform 3 communications with the ease of XSL.  Only overhead is the HTTP communication, little overhead when you use XSL depending on the API.  Hope these examples help.

Subject: [cf-xml] Stupid Newbie Question

Hello all,

I have a stupid newbie question for you all.  Ive been learning XML and can see how you would use it in news headlines and as a way to store information (like a database) but why would you want to use it instead of a database.  I know that XML can send information from database to database or to to use from application to application (i.e. using a cfml form to read an xml file and using a flash movie to read the same file) but what else can you do with it.  I am very interested in the subject.    What types of things have you all seen.  The books i have teach you all about how to write xml but none of the 3 books that I have on the subject tell me how to use the language in real world applications.  Also what types of things have you all seen that integrates XML and Coldfusion (not just WDDX but XML).

Thanks for the help.

DJ
