Correct. I rebooted it to fix it for now.

I have seen stability, performance, and UI consistency issues on
recent versions of macOS but I'm not familiar enough with the OS
to be able to pinpoint versions or root causes.

It's not as simple as this in Tahoe anymore? The recipe I used
to set up the machine originally doesn't seem to work for Tahoe.

Here is what is currently done on Tahoe (pre-reboot):

  # mdutil -i off
  # mdutil -a -d

Here is what I used originally when this machine was set up:

  # launchctl unload -w
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.locate.plist
  # launchctl unload -w
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mds.plist
  # launchctl unload -w
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mds.index.plist
  # launchctl unload -w
/System/Library/LaunchDaemons/com.apple.mds.scan.plist

There is a new Tahoe update:

* Label: Command Line Tools for Xcode 26.3-26.3
Title: Command Line Tools for Xcode 26.3, Version: 26.3,
Size: 857872KiB, Recommended: YES,
* Label: macOS Tahoe 26.3-25D125
Title: macOS Tahoe 26.3, Version: 26.3, Size:
3589550KiB, Recommended: YES, Action: restart,

however it currently runs 26.2, and the release notes for 26.3
don't indicate that there are any relevant stability fixes.

If there are any Apple employees reading this, please consider
passing along such a bug report or clarifying how to remedy it.
