My big book of _javascript_ suggests that you might need a semicolon after
var image1 = new Image() (and the other similar lines)
 
e.g.
 
<script>
 var image1 = new Image();
 image1.src = ""> var image2 = new Image();
 image2.src = ""
 var image3 = new Image();
 image3.src = ""> var image4 = new Image();
 image4.src = ""
 </script>
