I wouldn't assume there was a reason. It sounds like you want to know why Adobe did it, and you will probably never find out why. Shoot, the guys who did it were back in the Allaire days, and most of the old CF coders are gone now. Even me (I worked on the structSort function believe it or not).
It _would_ be kind of cool if we could get a hold of one of the engineers who was around in the old days (like I said, only 1 or 2 still exist, like Tom Harwood) and interview them about some of the thought processes behind how stuff was done.
