PROGRESS! I searched around and ended up finding a much more comprehensive tutorial. I was looking at the test drive earlier, which takes a pretty quick view of a complex thing. The tutorial I found is called Flex In A Week, which covers the issues i was having in much more depth and now I've got things rocking along beautifully.
As it happens, the day one presentations also go into Eclipse matters quite a bit too, and that explains lots of things that were not apparent to me when i last looked at Eclipse. Thanks for your help Rae, Gerald and Andrew.
