I recently completed the Matter Solutions SEO training. I was surprised how much of what they do comes down to social engineering - cold calling for links.
The course wasn't so much about what to do technically, or how to trick google (anything that promotes tricking google should be left very well alone) but covered a lot on which tools to use (Moz) and how to compare your rankings against competitors. I'm sure everyone that offers SEO as a service will tell you how the other guy is wrong, and only they have the secret sauce. But as a dev, it was interesting to me to see what actually goes into an SEO campaign. Essentially it all came down to make great content, get great links to it.
