OK so this isn't a ColdFusion topic, but it's not as if I am bogging down
an incredibly busy forum with OT posts. I decided to post it here because
I know a lot of you personally and respect your opinions.

I just got to wondering about the term SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
because I am beginning to see it as a requirement in almost every web dev
job ad.

I'm thinking that given the secrecy with which Google guard it's algorithms
and their vast knowledge about how web site owners try to game the system,
that SEO is kind of like praying to (insert favorite God or messiah here).
Impossible to prove that it doesn't work, and very easy to claim that it
has worked when the wind blows your way.

Now of course I'm not talking about the standard techniques that make it
easy for web crawler to find your page and navigate the site (like the
sitemap xml), I'm talking about the claims made by some people that they
can improve your sites ranking by some special technique, so that you get a
high ranking regardless of the relevance of your site to the search terms.

So do you think that it's possible to trick Google into lifting your site's
ranking or are there legitimate, non-deceptive techniques for doing so.

regards,
Stephen
