Another weird take on this whole thing: Maybe more browsers is a good thing. At some point if we have enough browsers sharing the market (and the dominant browsers had their position eroded) performing browsers specific hacks will become pointless & redundant. So what do we then program for? Well call me crazy but the spec might be a novel idea - leave browsers to render content however they like and just worry about doing the authoring correctly.
I guess its a shame that the only real market that this browser will erode is that of IE/MAC which AFAIK is one of the best out there (standards wise). I also guess that as www content is delivered across more mediums (ie. not just to the conventional desktop) this is going to happen anyway. RANT: We (& our clients) have to get away from the idea of the web as a cdrom or desktop application. Its a primarily marked up data, with other things like presentation and behaviour/interaction/events independently (optionally?) laid over the top. http://www.w3.org/DesignIssues/Principles.html & http://www.hixie.ch/advocacy/web-page-design/ were written a while a go but they still makes sense.
