You can always open port 1433, and restrict it to your static IP (or range
if you're on dial-up).

There are a couple of desktop visual management tools out there (of varying
quality, functionality and price) like:

DbaMgr2k - http://www.asql.biz/DbaMgr.shtm

I thought the SQL Server client tools were freely distributable, although
maybe that's only for licensed MSDN'ers.
