I understand it is always possible to open up ports and secure them - but not when you have an external arm of the company that solely exists for running security checks across your public addresses to find potential security holes (1433 being one of which they really dont like).  In addition, in our instance, SQL*Server is actually behing two firewalls (even the web servers only access it through a firewall - and they are even firewalled off via a load balancer).

It is always possible to use another port - but that may be seen by the security police as a very deliberate violation of policy.

Just saying that it is not always about technical feasibility but often about control.
