Hi Mark, In fireworks you have to use file/export since file/save uses Fireworks proprietary "enhanced png" format (that saves all layer info). Use the setting dropdown in the optimise panel to choose the gif format you want ... from memory GIF websnap 128 is the default so you just need to mark your crop area, hit enter to crop it then file/export.
