>> of 4.0 and v 4.1 (which is still in alpha of development)

Mark: which version do you speak? I've been running 4.0.something Gamma for
a couple of months now with an (almost) usable MySQL tool called Control
Center.

I'm sorry, but I've been spoilt by MSSQLServer. I'm assessing MySQL for a
job at the moment and it doesn't shape up.

Why? Unless it's got SProcs, transactions and (as a nice touch) triggers (as
well as decient client dev tools), it's almost useless. Imbeded SQL in code?
Sorry, not for this job. i need these things now.

NOW, Postgres sounds interesting. Last I used it was 3 years ago and it had
promise as well as it seemed truer to ANSI SQL than PL/SQL or T-SQL.

Can I get it for free? Does it happily support SP's and transactions? Come
with a nice GUI for development/design? is there a huge support base with
lots of help?

Is it easy to use? Easy to attach/detach/backup the database (data +
schema), generate and run SQL files? Please, do tell...

they're the things I judge a decent piece of *kit*. Anything less and you
might as well go back to Access...

keeping a postgres open mind
cheers

Subject: [cfaussie] mySQL comes into its own?

Hey everyone, just reading the new version press release from mySQL

http://www.mysql.com/press/release_2003_10.html

I must say - I'm quite exited about the prospects of 4.0 and v 4.1
(which is still in
alpha of development)

I know personally my major gripes with mySQL are - no foreign key
constraints,
no transactional processing, and no sub queries.

While these are not all taken care of in V. 4.0, by 4.1 they will be.

What is also planned for v 5.0 is also a long time coming, but also
looks quite
promising. (stored procedures being one thing)

Do you guys think we may see more of a pickup with ColdFusion and mySQL
development in the future? - At least possibly in a hosted environment?

I can see it being a very good quality alternative for those projects in
which an Access (shudder) db is used as MSSQL is just too big and too
expensive to have hosted for that project.

Just thought I'd throw this out there - and see what people thought...

or maybe I'm just bored while this server is down and I can do no
work...
