The following is still somewhat kludgy, but may be an option...

Considering your first option of
"use <cflocation> to present another page to the user while the first one
continues to process the code below the <cflocation> call"

I suspect this would fail as once it hit's the cflocation processing on that
page halts.

However, I wonder what would happen if you had

<META HTTP-EQUIV="Refresh" CONTENT="1; URL=show_me_to_user.cfm">
<cfflush>
<cflocation url="my_background_processing">

No guarantees, but may work.
