Your theory sounds about right. As for going the plain text route, I
wouldn't bother. Going through each DSN and re-entering passwords is a
minimal hassle (I only had 3 DSNs), certainly much easier than manually
re-entering all the cfadmin settings.

No the CF5 box is still up and running on CF5, we just manually migrated all
the settings.
